bag of goodies and a bottle of wine; we’re gonna get it on right tonight

January 22, 2009

Four obscure, yet illustrious decades later and their gig is still crunchy and organic.  A familiar knot in the stomach develops and an emotion of some sort of strength exudes as the speakers pump out “these eyes” or “new mother nature.”  Briefly quoting a song by The Guess Who, my friend JP instantly comments… and we both know; we are connected through a feeling only found through the music.  It can hit hard and explain everything you were so fucking confused about with concise and compelling style.

As a child, my weekends were spent driving through Ohio; from Columbus to Akron, from Akron to Columbus.  The music is what kept us together.  Specifically, The Guess Who was a Canadian band that my dad perpetually played on those suffocating car rides.  Just thinking about music that can hit so hard today with such nostalgic power proves that we must live for what moves us.  As my friend Danny mentioned the other day, music is the only thing that, when heard during the most emotionally painful situations, can erase and rejuvenate your state of mind into a collected repose.

I always tell the girls, never take it seriously, if ya never take it seriously, then ya never get hurt, ya never get hurt, ya always have fun, and if you ever get lonely, just go to the record store and visit your friends.

Music is cool. I like it.

  2. Your post had me at wine (red or white, maybe both ah you only live once right?)Music tends to bring people closer to each other in ways words can’t describe.

    For Example;

    My wife love’s country.
    I hate country.
When she listens to country I get an overwhelming urge to rip my ears out and go deaf willingly.

Besides that Taproot rules and they need more love.

  3. Sara Begin Says:

Wow. I totally agree. Music takes our memories of pain, joy, love -what-have-you- and brings them to the surface while magnifying our experiences of the past that were maybe once lost. I could never heal with out the help of great music!

  4. Tim Hughes Says:

Music brings people together. When you are around people that you have nothing in common with, share with them your favorite music and videos. They will likely share with you their favorite music… and now you have something in common with each other. Perhaps you will also discover a whole new genre of music you didn’t know you liked!

  5. Lindsay Hicks Says:

“When I hear music, I fear no danger. I am invulnerable. I see no foe. I am related to the earliest times, and to the latest.”
-Henry David Thoreau (one of my favorites)

PS “These Eyes” by The Guess Who, is easily one of the best songs of all time..hands down:)

  6. Dan Haines Says:

So happy for you beth! Keep living the dream and writing from the heart!
